Today May 3 marks World Day of Freedom expression. For this reason the United Nations Secretary General, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and UNESCO Director-General issued a joint message.
expressed in its statement that the World Day of Press Freedom was born twenty years ago in Windhoek (Namibia). The Windhoek Declaration was a call to fight to protect the fundamental principles of freedom of expression, enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the world heard those bells ring bent for change. Twenty years later, the media landscape has changed beyond recognition, but they say our goal remains the same: to promote freedom of expression as the foundation of human dignity and a cornerstone of democracy.
They continue: In this World Day of Press Freedom 2011, we urge all governments to make common cause with the United Nations to guarantee and promote freedom of expression in the print media, on the airwaves and Internet.
And although we say that the United Nations dedicated its efforts to make the Internet will become a truly world wide public appeal, which all have access and we can all make our voices heard, nothing said about the situation women's access to the media.
And the numbers are compelling. For example, in Mexico the percentage of participation of women in the newspaper industry is less than 25%.
The study "Women and Media", National Institute of Women, the media reveals that the disparity is significant because in the Directorate General Chair, Vice-Chairman or Council print media, there is a 75% of men, 25% of women.
In E is 78% of men by about 22% of women. In coordination area is 74.1% for men, while 25.9% for women. Edit and decision making positions are 73.9% men account for 26.1% of women. As the proportion of Journalists is 78.6% of men and 21.4% of women.
In the radio industry things are not very different because the total 76.9% were men, and 23.1% female. In General Management, President, Vice-Chair, and Council is 87.8% men and 12.2% women. In E 82.1% men and 17.9% women. As for the Coordination of areas have a 67.7% men and 32.3% women.
Finally, in the television industry the proportion finding is similar to 79.7% of men by 20.3% of women. In General Management, President, Vice-Chair, and Council is a staggering 95.2% of men by 4.8% in women. In E we have 88.4% of men versus 11.6% of women. In coordination area television has a 66.7% of men for 33.3% of women.
why we can not but reflect on this World Day of freedom of expression, whether in our country has reached that freedom, while women are spared the right to communication.
