State government should improve the quality of public services, says World Bank

The next government of Peru needs to improve the quality of public services, mainly health and education for better public confidence, said today the World Bank Vice President, Otaviano Canuto.
"Whoever wins this election (in Peru) should pay attention to this point, may improve the quality of public services," he said.

indicated that in all countries of the world that are members of the World Bank has been that public confidence in the public sector is an important element of a country's development.

"In developed countries, public confidence in government based on issues such as combating corruption, respect and good governance," he said.

however, said that in the case of Peru, as in other countries in the region, that trust is linked with better quality management of public services, especially in education and health.

"If there is a greater attention to improving the quality of education and health, public confidence in the rule change dramatically," he said.

Canuto said the quality of economic policies in Peru in the last two decades helped to greatly improve the performance of the country.

"The performance of the macroeconomy is a necessary condition for poverty reduction but not enough, "he said.

In this regard, it considered important that the next government will also maintain the same level of attention to the efforts of reducing poverty and improving macroeconomic performance.

"We can not imagine being able to focus on one, but what we know is that macroeconomic growth is a necessary condition," he said.

For his part, chief economist for Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, World Bank Carlos Silva-Jauregui, said the multilateral agency to await the next president of Peru to begin negotiating strategy of support among both parties.

"The strategy we have in Peru is due this year and we will begin the process of negotiating a new strategy, which will have activities for which the World Bank will support the development of the country in the future," he said.
